The U.S. Green Electronics EPEAT Certification evaluates televisions for the first time.

Following the launch of the IEEE 1680.2 (TV) standard earlier this year, the U.S. Green Electronics EPEAT mark has officially opened for registration. The first batch of manufacturers to receive EPEAT TV certification includes LG and Samsung.

The EPEAT environmental assessment mechanism originated in the United States and is a standard for evaluating the diverse environmental performance of electronic products. Since 2006, EPEAT has been the gold standard for sustainability assessment in the electronics industry. Its initial purpose was to help companies, governments, and consumers purchase more environmentally friendly personal computers and monitors. Initially, EPEAT only applied to products such as desktop computers, laptops, and computer monitors, but it has now gradually expanded to the field of home appliances.

According to the IEEE 1680.2 standard, televisions must meet 24 "required" criteria. To achieve the EPEAT Gold rating, television products must meet an additional 29 "optional" criteria. IEEE 1680.2 was developed over four years by hundreds of stakeholders from environmental groups, manufacturing industries, research institutions, recycling companies, and the public sector.

Since 2006, the EPEAT assessment mechanism has had a considerable impact on environmental protection. Consumers who choose to buy EPEAT-registered electronics have reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 11 million U.S. cars, reduced toxic emissions by 394,000 metric tons, and reduced solid waste emissions by nearly 167,000 metric tons – equivalent to the annual waste generation of nearly 86,000 U.S. households.
