Mainland China announces industry standard for "Labeling Requirements for Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products"

Mainland China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced the industry standard SJ/T 11364-2024, "Requirements for Labeling the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products."

"Requirements for Labeling the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products" will take effect in April

On December 25, 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of Mainland China announced the industry standard "Requirements for Labeling the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products." This standard specifies the labeling methods and requirements for information on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. It applies to electrical and electronic products sold domestically and can also serve as a reference for their logistics processes. The standard will take effect on April 1, 2025.

Major Updates: Standard Title, Scope of Application, Terminology, and Labeling Methods.

The main revisions are as follows:

The standard name has been changed from SJ/T11364-2014, "Labeling Requirements for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products," to "Labeling Requirements for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products," and the scope of application has been changed to "electrical and electronic products," consistent with the applicable laws and regulations.
Added terms such as "electrical and electronic products" and "labeling"; deleted terms such as "recycling" and "logistics"; revised terms such as "hazardous substances" and "environmentally friendly use period";
The marking method of product production date has been deleted;
Added identification methods and requirements using QR codes (6.4);
Added requirement to support web pages as identity carriers (6.6);
Added requirements for the preservation of supporting files for the names and contents of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products (7);
Four new categories of phthalates have been added to the list of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products (Appendix A).

This standard announcement will facilitate alignment with the previously drafted national standard "Requirements for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products." The restricted substances listed in China's RoHS and EU RoHS regulations will be the same. However, China's RoHS differs from the EU's RoHS in terms of unit separation, scope of control, labeling requirements, and exclusions.
