Analysis of ISO 14064-1:2018 Organizational Greenhouse Gas Inventory

On December 19, 2018, ISO officially released the new version of ISO 14064-1:2018, Greenhouse gases — Part 1: Quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals by organizations, with guidance. This new version differs from the 2006 version as follows: 1. Inventory and reporting boundaries: Direct greenhouse gas emissions must be quantified, and a documented procedure must be established to define which indirect greenhouse gas emissions outside the organizational boundary should be included in the reporting boundary and inventory. 2. Quantification procedures: Quantified data is categorized as primary, site-specific, and secondary data, and quantification methods must consider technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness. 3. Added definitions: a. Added the definition of indirect greenhouse gas emissions: emissions from an organization's operations and activities that are not owned or controlled by the organization (typically occurring upstream and/or downstream). b. Added definitions for biogenic material and land use. c. Clarified distinctions between organizations, stakeholders, and verification, with explanations of related terms. 4. Added the relationship between ISO 14060 series of greenhouse gas standards (see Table 1 for details). 5. Added background information for ISO 14060 series of standards: ISO 14060 series of standards provides a complete and comprehensive set of standards for quantifying, monitoring, reporting, verifying or certifying greenhouse gas emissions and removals.

Taiwan's mobile phone recycling rate lags internationally. Convenience stores and cleaning crews are actively collecting phones nationwide. Reselling and repairing these phones is also sustainable.

Over 50% of Taiwanese people have several unused mobile phones. But did you know? 100 iPhones can yield approximately 0.97 grams of gold, 7.5 grams of silver, and 710 grams of copper; recycling 10,000 iPhones saves production energy equivalent to 140 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Although Taiwan's mobile phone recycling rate has increased annually to 12%, it still lags behind the international average of 15-20%. According to an EPA survey, reasons people are reluctant to recycle their phones include not knowing where to recycle, a lack of recycling incentives, and concerns about personal data leaks. The Mobile Phone Journey: Disassembly, Refining, and Reuse Where do old phones go? Whether they're handed over to convenience stores, telecom operators, mobile phone stores, or cleaning crews, the mobile phone's recycling journey is about to begin. Li Zhiyi, Director of the Electronics, Electrical, and Information Products Management Group of the Environmental Protection Administration's Recycling Foundation, stated in an interview that manual disassembly and subsequent refining during the mobile phone recycling process can generate unreusable waste, requiring it to be handled by qualified operators. Reusable plastics and precious metals will each enter the appropriate recycling process. Taking iPhones as an example, 100 iPhones can produce approximately 0.97 grams of gold, 7.5 grams of silver, and 710 grams of copper. The extracted precious metals can all enter the recycling process. The production energy saved by recycling every 10,000 iPhones is equivalent to 140 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Li Zhiyi explained that although mobile phones are general waste, they contain harmful ingredients, so they need to be handed over to private "Class A treatment institutions" for treatment.

Fairphone 4, a modular, eco-friendly phone that allows for easy repairs with just a screwdriver, has launched in Taiwan.

How often do you upgrade your phone? Fairphone, a Dutch eco-friendly mobile phone brand known for its modular design and easy repairability with just a screwdriver, officially launched in Taiwan yesterday (8th). Fairphone advocates extending the lifecycle of mobile phones, reducing electronic waste and carbon emissions, and its first Asian market expansion is in Taiwan. The fourth-generation "Fairphone 4," sold exclusively by Royal Telecommunications and Far EasTone Telecommunications, comes with a two-year warranty in Taiwan and a three-year warranty internationally, along with a five-year parts supply and software update guarantee. The Fairphone 4, an eco-friendly phone with easily replaceable parts, has launched in Taiwan. Mobile phones bring convenience to our lives, but both the extraction of raw materials and the disposal of discarded waste place a significant burden on the planet, and the manufacturing process has been plagued by labor rights issues. Founded in 2013, the Dutch eco-friendly mobile phone brand "Fairphone" advocates fair production practices, easy-to-repair designs, and a high proportion of recycled materials, bringing environmentally and human rights-friendly alternatives to the market. Fairphone launched the fourth generation "Fairphone 4" last year and held a press conference for its launch in Taiwan yesterday (8th). It will be sold exclusively by Royal Telecommunications and Far EasTone Telecommunications. Fairphone co-founder and project director Miquel Ballester Salvà said that the first market outside of Europe to enter is Taiwan. "Seeing people holding Fairphone 4 on the streets of Taiwan is a step towards a fair and sustainable world.

The Environmental Protection Agency launches a "Resource Recycling Virtual Park" to turn waste into products.

Taiwan's resource recycling will also have its own dedicated "virtual park," but this has nothing to do with the metaverse, nor is it a traditional industrial park. Instead, it's an innovative mechanism for the Environmental Protection Administration to promote a circular economy. This mechanism allows businesses and mid- and downstream waste recycling organizations and processing plants to team up to create "resource recycling networks." Because upstream, mid- and downstream businesses are located in different counties and cities but are part of the same recycling industry chain, waste disposal plans can be packaged and applied for together, just like a virtual park, allowing users to see the past and present of waste recycling all at once. The Environmental Protection Administration recently issued a regulation. Unlike the past, when the "waste clearance documents" of each industry chain had to be reviewed by different competent authorities, which was time-consuming and laborious, the new regulation invites local and central authorities, experts, and representatives of public associations to jointly review them, eliminating unnecessary communication time and costs. The upstream, midstream and downstream management units are different and the review of waste clearance documents is time-consuming. Taiwan's strong manufacturing industry is also moving towards a circular economy process. For example, after high-tech factories etch printed circuit boards, the waste acid containing copper ions will not be discarded, but sent to "recycling agencies" to be made into copper salt raw materials and copper powder raw materials, and then enter the "processing plant" to be remade into products, such as copper metal or various metal salts, and finally returned to the market or returned to the production line. In order to effectively manage the waste cycle, the Environmental Protection Agency stipulates that enterprises that reach a certain scale or produce hazardous waste, as well as waste "recycling agencies" must submit a "waste cleanup plan" (referred to as a waste clearance plan) to the local or central competent authorities, and they can only operate after review. Waste clearance plan

The Marine Waste Label has certified 18 products in two years. World Cup jerseys and national team blue and white slippers highlight the value of the circular economy.

Wearing marine waste is nothing new. The jerseys of national teams like Germany, Spain, and Argentina, currently underway, are made from recycled fibers from Taiwan and contain marine waste. Another company has developed the world's first pair of fully recycled marine waste slippers, the "New National Blue and White Slippers," made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. These slippers not only represent Taiwan's grassroots culture but also highlight the value of the circular economy. Last year, the Environmental Protection Agency launched the "Marine Waste Label," and over the past two years, it has certified seven companies and 18 products. The next step is to include the Marine Waste Label in the Recycling Fund's green rate program, allowing businesses using recycled marine waste to enjoy preferential recycling rates. This program is expected to take effect in the first half of next year (2023). Products awarded the label will also be prioritized for government procurement of environmentally friendly products. The new national blue and white slippers are made in Taiwan even from marine waste. Shampoo can also obtain the marine waste label. The "GreenPlax® New National Blue and White Slippers" developed by "22 Dream Factory", a brand under the casual shoe brand Chilu International, are known as the world's first pair of marine waste fully recycled slippers. Each pair of shoes is made from five marine waste plastic bottles, three recycled oyster shells and some environmentally friendly EVA materials. In order to achieve "local full recycling", the team uses marine waste plastic bottles not only from local Taiwan, but also has established a production line in Taichung to build a local green supply chain. The development team is currently carrying out a fundraising plan and plans to donate part of the proceeds in the future. In addition to organizing a number of national beach cleanups, they also promised to buy the plastic bottles of scavengers at three times the price to promote the recycling of marine waste and land plastic bottles. Beauty.

Delta Shares Island Energy Storage and Coral Restoration Experience at COP27

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Egypt brought together government officials, private enterprises, and organizations from around the world. Taiwan was also present at this climate conference. The Delta Electronics Foundation, a long-time participant in UN climate conferences since 2007, organized a dual-themed conference focused on the concept of "islands," sharing its climate mitigation measures and ecological adaptation concepts with the international community. This year, Delta was the only Taiwanese organization to participate in the "Action Hub," sharing its coral restoration experience and discussing diverse topics with international experts, including heat-resistant genes and blue carbon. Furthermore, at the "Side Event," Delta engaged with representatives from the Spanish island governments and experts from the renowned American energy think tank RMI, using its own energy storage solutions to address the challenges of island energy transition, addressing the needs of the two Spanish islands for energy transition, and providing experience in building grid resilience. Delta's participation in the Side Event and the Action Hub took place on the same day. The Action Hub marked Delta's first application to host, making Delta the only Taiwanese organization to receive the qualification review. The action initiative discussion differs from the traditional meeting format. In the official negotiation area, a semi-open space was used to allow participants to participate freely. Delta proposed to echo the coral restoration issue actively promoted by the host country Egypt, and then explored professional topics such as scientific methods for observing and restoring corals, heat-resistant coral gene research, and blue carbon ecosystems. Academia Sinica releases Net Zero Technology Recommendations, urging rapid implementation of five key power technologies, including decarbonized hydrogen.

Yesterday (30), the Academia Sinica released the "Taiwan Net Zero Technology R&D Policy Proposal". Director Liao Junzhi said that the analysis of net zero emission technology from the perspective of scientific research is to "create sufficient zero-carbon electricity". The proposal lists several high-risk and high-benefit technologies that should be "promoted as soon as possible", including decarbonized hydrogen, geothermal energy, ocean energy, high-efficiency solar photovoltaic systems, biomass carbon sinks, etc. It hopes that by implementing net zero technology, it will drive Taiwan's energy transformation and industrial transformation, and move towards net zero in 2050. Carbon emissions from power generation account for 48%. Zero-carbon electricity is the key to net zero. The Academia Sinica held a press conference yesterday (30th) to release the "Taiwan Net Zero Technology R&D Policy Proposal". Chen Yugao, director of the Center for Environmental Change Research, explained that the proposal is centered on science and technology, spanning six major themes including energy carbon reduction, manufacturing carbon reduction, and carbon sinks. While conducting scientific and technological research and development, it should also take into account supporting measures in the economic and social sciences, including policy incentives, legal environment, and social communication. The proposal points out that the research and development of net-zero technology must first consider the carbon reduction benefits, give priority to the main carbon-emitting sectors, emphasize the speed of research and development and the scale of deployment, and take into account the diversity, locality and dispersion of energy. Currently, more than 90% of China's greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector, of which more than 48% are from power generation, and future energy use will be mainly based on electricity supply. "Creating sufficient zero-carbon electricity" has become the key to the net-zero strategy. Regarding the technology research and development options for zero-carbon electricity, the proposal analyzes the technical advantages, existing limitations and future challenges from an objective perspective, and "promotes" them as quickly as possible according to risk-benefit and technological development.

The government is promoting the electrification of transportation vehicles; Taipower estimates that electricity consumption will increase by nearly 2.4 billion kWh by 2030.

Digital technology will be a key driver in achieving the 2050 net-zero carbon emissions target. The Telecommunications and Transportation Technology Development Foundation (TTF), the Taiwan Institute of Sustainable Energy (TAISE), and Far EasTone Telecommunications jointly held the "2022 9th International Green Smart Transportation Forum" on the 26th to discuss the possibilities of smart, low-carbon transportation. Taiwan aims to fully electrify its urban buses by 2030 and all new cars and motorcycles by 2040. Taipower estimates that at the current growth rate, electricity consumption will increase by nearly 2.4 billion kWh by 2030. On the other hand, simply switching from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles will not solve carbon emissions and traffic problems; transportation transformation must return to a people-oriented approach. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications stated that it will use an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to analyze public mobility data and complete comprehensive strategic planning. The government is promoting the electrification of vehicles. Taipower estimates that electricity consumption will increase by nearly 2.4 billion kWh in 2030. Hu Xianglin, Deputy Minister of Transportation, explained that carbon reduction in the transportation sector is crucial to the net zero goal. Countries around the world are actively promoting the transformation to green transportation. Taiwan is also moving towards the electrification and carbon-free transportation of vehicles. It will increase the number of electric vehicles, improve the supporting facilities for their use, and provide guidance for industrial technology upgrades. The goal is to fully electrify urban buses by 2030 and fully electrify all new cars and motorcycles sold by 2040. The number of electric vehicles continues to rise, and the power supply must keep up. Rao Youzhen, Deputy Director of the Power Distribution Department of Taiwan Power Company, said that at the current growth rate of electric vehicles, it is estimated that electricity consumption will increase by about 2030.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is seeking low-carbon energy sources, with plans to convert retired coal-fired units into biomass-fired power plants, with the Xingda Power Plant serving as a pilot project.

Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Meihua delivered a business report at the Economic Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan yesterday (5th). Regarding the power supply plan, Wang Meihua said that the Ministry of Economic Affairs continues to promote the construction of renewable energy, with the goal of 29GW of renewable energy installation capacity by 2025, and will also build 1GW of energy storage equipment. In terms of existing power plants, in addition to the scheduled decommissioning of nuclear power plants, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is also evaluating the conversion of decommissioned coal-fired units into biomass units, and will use the Xingda Power Plant as a demonstration. The Ministry of Economic Affairs strives for renewable energy to achieve a 20% share of power generation by the end of 2026. Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Meihua delivered a business report at the Economic Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan yesterday. Regarding the power supply issue that concerns the society, Wang Meihua said that in order to optimize the domestic investment environment, the Ministry will continue to promote renewable energy, gas-fired power generation, and energy storage facilities to ensure stable power supply, with the goal of adding a net 3GW of power supply capacity by the end of 2025. Many legislators questioned the delay of the "532 Policy". Wang Meihua said that due to the continuous increase in the denominator of electricity consumption in recent years and the problem of offshore wind power contracts, the original goal of 20% of renewable energy power generation in 2025 is estimated to be delayed until October 2026. However, Wang Meihua emphasized that the installation and power generation of renewable energy continue to increase. The goal is to have a renewable energy installation capacity of 29GW in 2025, including 20GW of photovoltaic installation capacity, 5.6GW of offshore wind power, and 1GW of energy storage equipment. Starting from 2026, more than 2GW of photovoltaic installations will be added each year, and the expansion will continue. According to statistics from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, as of the end of August, the installation of renewable energy totaled 12,799MW (about 12.8GW), of which solar

Environmental Protection Department launches waste reduction guidelines for convenience stores on outlying islands, with Orchid Island 7-11 taking the lead in minimizing packaging

During the peak tourist season, outlying islands are often reported to have a huge amount of garbage. The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday (5th) released the "Offshore Island Convenience Store Source Waste Reduction Service Design Guidelines", which guides outlying island convenience stores to reduce plastic through product repackaging and display methods based on the three principles of naked sales, large packaging, and alternative materials. Starting in June this year, the two 7-ELEVEN stores on Lanyu Island replaced the shelves full of plastic bottles and plastic containers with easily recyclable aluminum cans, naked sales products, and large family-sized packages. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that after implementation, about 1.3 tons of plastic waste can be reduced each year. 7-ELEVEN also promised that by the end of the year, 90% of its outlying island stores will adopt the guidelines and transform into green stores. Naked sales, large packaging, and alternative materials are the three principles of the offshore island waste reduction guidelines. Offshore island tourism is booming, but the islands are small and the transportation is inconvenient, making the resulting garbage difficult to handle and a long-term problem for the local area. There are more than 100 chain convenience stores on Taiwan's outlying islands, which produce a lot of plastic waste. Zhang Shaoxin, assistant environmental technician of the Recycling Management Committee of the Environmental Protection Department, said that at the beginning of this year, they had successively negotiated with 7-ELEVEN and FamilyMart to announce the "Guidelines for the Design of Source Waste Reduction Services for Convenience Stores on Outlying Islands" to provide principles for the reduction of plastics in outlying island stores. These principles include "minimum packaging", "large instead of small", and "alternative materials". Some chain supermarkets have also promised to reduce the use of plastic accordingly. For example, the two 7-ELEVEN stores on Lanyu have replaced some plastic bottles of beverages with easily recyclable aluminum cans (alternative materials); and replaced multiple small packages of food and beverages with large packages (large instead of small); and can

With only an 11% market share last year, the electric locomotive industry is far from achieving its 2040 full electrification target.

According to the National Development Council's "2050 Net Zero Carbon Emissions Pathway," Taiwan expects electric motorcycles to account for 35% of all vehicles sold on the market by 2030, and all new passenger cars, including new cars, to be fully electrified by 2040. The Smart Mobility Association of Taiwan (SMAT), composed of electric motorcycle-related companies, released its "2022 Taiwan Electric Motorcycle Industry Policy Proposal" today (1st), proposing to reach 50% of the electric motorcycle target by 2030, while also encouraging local governments to set a timetable for achieving the target earlier than 2040. SMAT recommends that the government accelerate the achievement of the vehicle electrification goal through strategies such as increasing subsidy incentives, improving the environmentally friendly environment, or using policies to reward companies for choosing electric vehicles as their ESG solutions. Legislator Wang Wanyu and civil society groups also reminded that "people-oriented transportation" is the key to carbon reduction in the transportation sector, and that green public transportation should be promoted more actively. In order to achieve full electrification of new motorcycles sold by 2040, the industry calls for strengthening mid-term goals. The National Development Council announced Taiwan’s "2050 Net Zero Carbon Emission Path" in March this year. In terms of the transportation sector, the transportation sector’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 were approximately 36.99 million metric tons of CO2e, accounting for 12.8% of the country. Its emissions mainly came from road transportation, accounting for about 96.8%. It can be seen that promoting low-carbon or zero-carbon road vehicles is the primary path to net-zero transportation emissions. The current international trend is to replace traditional fuel vehicles with electric vehicles, so "vehicle electrification" has also been specifically included in the net-zero strategy. The National Development Council plans to achieve the goal of electric vehicles by 2030.

Environmental group statistics: 2021's top 20 carbon-emitting companies, 19 of which are green power companies, account for less than 1%

The Large Electricity User Clause, which has been in effect for nearly two years, requires companies with contracted capacity of 5,000 kilowatts (kW) or more to fulfill their obligation to use 10% green electricity within five years. With the review deadline approaching, the Taiwan Renewable Energy Alliance (TRENA) released its 2021 annual statistics on the 19th, showing that among the top 20 carbon-emitting companies in Taiwan, TSMC, which has the highest percentage of green electricity use, only accounts for 4% of its electricity consumption, while the remaining 19 companies use less than 1%. These 20 companies account for 44.6% of Taiwan's total carbon emissions. TRENA is urging companies to actively improve and hopes the government will tighten requirements for large electricity users. Legislators have also called on the executive branch to expedite the release of draft amendments to the three energy laws to align with the country's net zero goal and build a more comprehensive green electricity supply and demand system. Large carbon emitters only use a small amount of green electricity, and only TSMC accounts for more than 1%. According to the Taiwan Renewable Energy Promotion Alliance, among the top 20 domestic carbon emitters in 2021, only a few companies have built renewable energy for their own use. Among them, TSMC has the highest proportion of green electricity, with a usage of more than 4%, while other companies' green electricity accounts for less than 1%. Looking at the data, the second highest is Sinopec at about 0.87%, and the third-ranked CPC Taiwan is about 0.14%. Further review of the report submitted by TRENA, its data source is the ESG reports disclosed by various companies. Due to the different levels of information disclosure of each company, the calculation methods are slightly different. For example, TSMC only announced that its global electricity consumption is about 16 billion kWh, and the conversion of 660 million kWh of green electricity used in Taiwan resulted in a data of 4.11%, which is different from the data of TSMC.

Green Island's six-month trial of recycling cup rentals continues to challenge waste management on outlying islands

With the pandemic easing and domestic tourism resuming, Lanyu and Green Island have seen an influx of tourists, but this has also brought with it a significant amount of waste, leaving island landfills piled high. Due to the high cost of transporting waste back to Taiwan, the Taitung County Environmental Protection Bureau has diligently cleared and hauled away waste from these islands, but this only addresses the symptoms rather than the root cause. The Bureau urges visitors to these islands to reduce their use of disposable items and reduce waste at the source. Green Island launched a free, recyclable cup rental service this year, a pilot program that lasted nearly six months. Many businesses on the island have also stepped up to offer lunch box rentals, encouraging visitors to practice environmentally friendly, "waste-free" tourism. The hope is that visitors to Green Island will leave behind memories, not waste. Disposal efforts across seas and mountains have left island landfills near capacity. During peak tourist season, thousands of people flock to the islands daily, bringing both business opportunities and waste. Disposable toiletries, disposable tableware, plastic bags, and beverage cups used by tourists place a significant burden on the islands. In the past, Taitung County did not have an incinerator, so the garbage from Orchid Island and Green Island had to be shipped across the sea to Taitung, and then transferred and detoured halfway across Taiwan to other counties and cities such as Pingtung and Kaohsiung for processing. The transportation costs were very high, which resulted in frequent failures in waste transfer contracts, and a large amount of waste had to be temporarily placed in the island landfill. According to the Environmental Protection Administration's landfill information system, the total capacity of the Orchid Island landfill is about 39,000 cubic meters, but currently only 41 cubic meters remain, and the garbage is almost full; the total capacity of the Green Island landfill is 54,000 cubic meters, but currently less than 20% of the space is left. A large amount of waste has piled up a garbage mountain on the beautiful island. This year, the Taitung incinerator was officially put into use, and the first task was to solve the two problems of leaving

New air conditioning efficiency regulations take effect in 2025, saving an estimated 7.11 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is accelerating the phase-out of fixed-frequency air conditioners and recently announced an increase in the "Permissible Energy Consumption Standard" (MEPS) for air conditioners, which is expected to take effect in January 2025. The Bureau of Energy estimates that once the new energy standard is implemented, it will save approximately 7.118 million kWh of electricity annually, saving NT$20.22 million in electricity bills. The Bureau of Energy also reminds the public that when purchasing air conditioners, in addition to choosing inverter models, they can also identify first-class energy-efficiency products and compare the CSPF value on the rating label; the higher the value, the more energy-efficient they are. The Bureau of Energy raises the energy efficiency standard for air conditioners and phases out energy-consuming fixed-frequency air conditioners. With the recent high temperatures across Taiwan, staying indoors and turning on the air conditioner is the preferred way for many people to escape the heat. However, among all electrical appliances, air conditioners actually consume the most electricity. According to the Industrial Technology Research Institute's 2021 "Household Electricity Consumption Habits Survey", the largest proportion of household electricity consumption is air conditioners (29.46%), followed by refrigerators (11.98%) and lighting (9.92%); in the summer months, nearly half of household electricity consumption comes from air conditioners (49.25%). According to statistics from the Bureau of Energy, in 2021, residential electricity consumption accounted for approximately 18% of national electricity consumption. In order to reduce electricity consumption in the residential sector, the Bureau of Energy announced that it will increase the MEPS of "ductless air conditioners" (commonly known as air conditioners) in 2025, guide the industry to launch more efficient products, and promote the withdrawal of high-energy-consuming fixed-frequency air conditioners. The energy efficiency of air conditioners depends on the CSPF value. The energy benchmark has been raised by 3~5%. Since 2017, the indicator for determining the energy efficiency of air conditioners has been changed from the original "energy efficiency ratio" (EER) to the inclusion of non-

The Taiwan Wind Power Industry Development Association was established, and the local supply chain is eyeing key domestic generator technologies.

The Taiwan Wind Power Industry Development Association held its inaugural meeting yesterday (19th). Founding members include more than 40 domestic companies such as Century Wind Power, Hsin Kong Steel, Walsin Lihua, Senwei Energy, Huacheng Electric, and Shihlin Electric. Lai Wen-hsiang, chairman of Century Wind Power, who serves as the chairman, said that a wind turbine has hundreds of parts from top to bottom, and currently most of the localization projects are just assembly. The association's goal is to improve the local supply chain, from small screws to large generators, all of which must be produced by ourselves. Connecting the local wind power supply chain, the goal is "all made in Taiwan from top to bottom" In order to strengthen the domestic wind power supply chain capabilities, relevant companies formed the Taiwan Wind Power Industry Development Association and held its inaugural meeting and the first board of directors and supervisors on the 19th. The first chairman of the association was elected by Lai Wen-hsiang, chairman of Century Wind Power. Lai Wen-hsiang said that a wind turbine has hundreds of components, and the current localization policy is mostly just assembly work. Important components such as generators rarely use domestic parts, which is not helpful to the local industry. The association's goal is to connect the domestic supply chain, "from a screw to a generator", all produced in Taiwan. Lai Wen-hsiang also mentioned that the number of wind farms will increase exponentially in the future. Once the local supply chain is established, it will also be possible to attract foreign generator manufacturers to set up factories in Taiwan and introduce key motor technologies. In his speech, Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Quan-neng stated that the domestic wind power industry does need to establish localized production capacity, and organizing the association is like preparing to "carry out the energy of tomorrow." In the future, the central government will continue to cooperate across ministries and local governments to help the industry supply chain consolidate the upper and middle

Tainan and Hsinchu desalination plants pass environmental impact assessments, producing 300,000 tons of water per day and increasing annual electricity consumption by 380 million kWh.

In response to climate change, and to prevent the next drought, the Water Resources Agency plans to build a desalination plant on the island. The Environmental Protection Agency held the 423rd environmental impact assessment meeting yesterday (13th) to review the "Tainan Desalination Plant Construction Plan" and the "Hsinchu Desalination Plant Construction Plan", and both proposals were approved. In the future, the two desalination plants will be in operation, with a total water production of up to 300,000 CMD (tons/day), but will also consume 384 million kWh of electricity each year. Water supply has been unstable in recent years. The Water Resources Agency: Building a desalination plant will increase water supply resilience. In recent years, severe droughts have occurred frequently, and the problem of tight regional water supply has come to the fore. Although Tainan has the Zengwen and Nanhua reservoirs, they are greatly affected by the wet and dry seasons. In the past ten years, seven of them have implemented water supply reductions for people's livelihood, industry or irrigation due to low rainfall; Hsinchu has to adjust the water sources of the Shimen Reservoir in Taoyuan and the Yongheshan Reservoir in Miaoli for a long time because the capacity of the Baoyi and Baoer Reservoirs is relatively small. In order to reduce the risk of water shortage, the Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to build desalination plants on state-owned land along the coast of Jiangjun, Tainan and Nanliao, Hsinchu. At the environmental impact assessment conference yesterday, the Water Resources Agency stated that in addition to Taiwan, record-breaking droughts have also occurred around the world. Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, and the construction of desalination plants will help improve the resilience of water supply. The Tainan Desalination Plant and the Hsinchu Desalination Plant, planned by the Southern District Water Resources Bureau and the Northern District Water Resources Bureau of the Water Resources Agency respectively, passed the environmental impact assessment conference yesterday. The Hsinchu plant covers an area of 10 hectares and has a water production capacity of 100,000 CMD; the Tainan plant covers an area of 17 hectares and will be built in two phases. The first phase will produce 100,000 CMD. After five years of operation, the second phase will be added, and the water production will increase to 200,000 CMD.

Coca-Cola launches Taiwan's first "label-free" alkaline ionized water

How difficult is it to remove the plastic label from a PET bottle? This summer, Coca-Cola launched a new brand, "bonaqua," an industry-leading, first-of-its-kind "single-bottle, label-free" bottled product. Using innovative laser engraving technology, product information is directly engraved on the bottle, replacing the old bottle label, reducing plastic usage and making PET bottle recycling more convenient. In an interview, Taiwan Watch Secretary-General Xie Helin stated that laser engraving on the bottle does not require additional pigments, which increases recycling efficiency and is likely to be welcomed by PET bottle processors. The Environmental Protection Agency is also optimistic about this approach and has suggested that differential rates may be used to encourage industry adoption. The first label-free product sold in single bottles will have product information laser-engraved on the bottle. On June 29th, Coca-Cola held a press conference to announce the official launch of its first label-free, single-bottle product in Taiwan this summer. This "bonaqua Yi Yang" alkaline ionized water adopts a fully transparent design, with the brand logo presented in embossed form, and the product information is also engraved on the bottle using the industry's innovative laser engraving technology, and the sales barcode is printed on the top of the bottle cap instead. However, where is the sustainable future of "one less label"? Chen Zhengfeng, general manager of Coca-Cola Taiwan, explained that lasering product information on the bottle not only improves the convenience of recycling, but also successfully breaks the threshold that unlabeled products can only be sold in boxes in the past. It is currently the only unlabeled product on the market in Taiwan that can be sold individually. He said that rather than starting with lightweight packaging, the reason for choosing no label is "to give consumers a more intuitive feeling, and see that it is transparent."

Taiwan's mobile phone recycling rate lags internationally. Convenience stores and cleaning crews are actively collecting phones nationwide. Reselling and repairing these phones is also sustainable.

2022-12-12

2022-12-12

2022-12-05

2022-12-03

Electric vehicles are a key component of Taiwan's 2050 Net Zero plan. On the 22nd, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications held a public communication meeting on the key strategy of "Electrification and Decarbonization of Transportation," proposing goals such as ending diesel bus subsidies starting next year, fully electrifying urban buses and government vehicles by 2030, and achieving 100% market share for electric passenger cars and motorcycles by 2040. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications proposes full electrification of buses by 2030 and 100% market share for electric cars and motorcycles by 2040. As part of Taiwan's 2050 Net Zero path, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is responsible for "Electrification and Decarbonization of Transportation," one of the 12 key strategies. The Ministry, along with relevant ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Environmental Protection Administration, and the Ministry of the Interior, is developing three major strategies: "increasing the number of electric vehicles," "improving environmental support for their use," and "upgrading and transforming industrial technology." In terms of the number of electric vehicles, the Ministry of Transportation first plans to stop subsidies for diesel buses starting next year, replace 11,700 city buses by 2030, and achieve full electrification of city buses and official vehicles, which is estimated to reduce 403,000 metric tons per year; electric passenger cars and motorcycles will achieve a market share of 30% and 35% respectively in 2030, with an estimated reduction of 748,000 metric tons and 595,000 metric tons, and achieve the goal of 100% market share by 2040. As a supporting measure, the Ministry of Transportation will set up a wide range of charging facilities, targeting public parking lots, electric vehicle dealerships and repair shops, and gas stations. At the same time, it will formulate charging facility specifications and a single window for charging facility installation applications to promote the popularization of charging facilities. In order to lower the threshold for electric vehicles, there are also various financial incentives.

2022-11-17

Together with the Taiwan Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium and the Global Ocean Observation Partnership,

Academia Sinica releases Net Zero Technology Recommendations, urging rapid implementation of five key power technologies, including decarbonized hydrogen.

2022-11-07

2022-10-28

2022-10-06

2022-09-06

2022-09-01

It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 30% (13.37 million tons) in 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions in 2050. Residential and commercial sectors have become the largest source of carbon emissions! New Taipei City pioneered the community "Energy Saving Clinic" and promoted household energy management systems. The "New Taipei City 2050 Net Zero Path and Climate Action White Paper" covers different departments such as residential and commercial, environment, industry, energy, and transportation, and is expected to invest NT$20 billion annually to implement carbon reduction strategies. At the same time, the draft of the "New Taipei City Climate Change Response Action Autonomous Ordinance" is being drafted to establish a legal basis for various carbon reduction measures in construction, commerce, industry, and transportation. At the same time, the "New Taipei Climate Fund" will also be established to use the carbon fees collected in the future for energy transformation work in schools, households or groups, including equipment energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy installations. According to statistics, New Taipei City's net greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 were 17.84 million metric tons, a decrease of about 6.7% from the base year (2005), and per capita carbon emissions decreased by 13.5%. Among them, emissions accounted for 39.41% of the residential and commercial sectors, and the industrial sector accounted for 2.

Environmental group statistics: 2021's top 20 carbon-emitting companies, 19 of which are green power companies, account for less than 1%

2022-08-22

2022-08-19

2022-07-26

2022-07-20

2022-07-14

2022-07-01
